Wren: A 2nd Generation Marked Heart Novel

WREN

2nd Generation Marked Heart Novel

Excerpt

The kitten on my lap jumped down, ran and hid under the couch. Meanwhile, my shirt was being pulled further under the door by a psycho kitty who sounded like he was conjuring a portal to hell. I thought we were in this together? Traitor!

576-481-0605: This is Jay.

Wren: Are you home?

J: Yes

Thank God!

Wren: I need you to come down here and help me out.

J: Where are you?

Wren: In my apartment.

J: Did you need a ride?

Wren: No, I need you to come here. It’s unlocked.

J: Are you propositioning me?

Seriously?

Wren: Just bring your ass down here? I have a situation!

J: Hang on.

I blew out a loud breath of relief hearing my front door open.

“Over here,” I shouted, resting the side of my head against the door.

Jay appeared to be caught between amusement and confusion as he looked down at me.

“Long story short, I adopted a sweet kitten and his brother a psychotic kitten from hell.”

He started to laugh then stopped when he heard what was behind the door.

“That’s a kitten?”

“He may also be a demon.”

Jay shook his head at me. “Why are you sitting on the floor?”

With a heavy sigh, I explained, “When we got home, I opened the carrier and he shot out of it and started attacking me. I didn’t know what else to do so I shut him in the bathroom. Then, I sat down to pet the other one and he got my shirt and won’t let go.”

“Take your shirt off.”

“Seriously?” I griped, narrowing my eyes at him.

Jay chuckled. “Slide down and pull your shirt off over your head.”

Oh, that actually makes sense.

I pulled both arms into my shirt then scooted down and pulled it over my head. The second I was free, the rest of my shirt whooshed under the door and into the bathroom.

Relieved, I stood up and stretched my arms over my head. I glanced in his direction, ready to thank him when I noticed his line of sight.

“Like you’ve never seen a girl in a bra before,” I spouted with an eye roll.

His tone was low and husky. “Yea but right now you’re putting them all to shame.”

They say you never forget your first kiss. Well, I did. Somewhere in the mix of random guys and hookups, the memory of a soft kiss on a hot summer afternoon slipped away from me. That was until the night he walked into my dad’s bar looking for a job.

We can get back to that in a minute…

My parents are Charlotte and Augustus Caffrey. After a few years of marriage, they were blessed with a set of twins. Me and my brother. I got the red hair and fiery spirit while my brother, First, came out blond with a flair for poetic angst. I’m Wren, by the way, and clearly the supreme sibling. Although my brother was named after our dad, I’m inheriting my family’s bar. The Dog House has been handed down to each Augustus in our family for generations. Until me and rightfully so. While other little girls were playing dress up and house, I was serving up apple juice boxes like they were pints of Guinness to the neighborhood kids behind a makeshift bar set up in my parents’ front yard. All I’ve ever wanted was to tend the bar like my dad and his before him.

Nothing’s changed for me. Meanwhile, everyone else has managed to get married and start having babies. I’m not resentful about that in the least. A little bored maybe, now that I’m the only single in the mix of pairs but I’m happy for them. They believe in love. Me, not so much…

Which brings us back to my first kiss and the guy who gave it to me, sitting at a corner table, across from me at my bar.

Palmer by M. Sembera *Release Day Blitz & Giveaway*

Palmer by M. Sembera
Release Date: April 6, 2017
I've known her my whole life. Okay, not really, I was three when she was born but who remembers being that young? Joie's like my little sister, at least, that's how I've treated her. She needed someone to look out for her. Her family's a mess. It doesn't seem to bother her but it bothers me. Just like when her first boyfriend broke up with her because she wouldn't put out. Joie didn't care but I did. That punk still runs the other way when he sees me. Most of my high school career was spent keeping her away from knuckleheads who only wanted to have fun with her, boys that thought she was hot because she was good on drums, and pretty much any guy that looked her way. She was too good for them, still is. She's too good for me; I know this. Here's the thing though, I want her. I can't stop thinking about her. And what makes it worse is I know she wants me. It would be easy. I don't exactly have a history of being the good boyfriend or any kind of boyfriend. I'm not into that. Easy come, easy go. But this is Joie and that makes things complicated. I don't do complicated. Easy is my thing, always has been. There's only so much a man can take though. Each day, I can feel my self-control slipping. One more accidental touch and I'm gonna break. One more goofy smile and I won't be able to hold back any more. One more drum beat and I'm done.
I  could never resist picking her up, even before I wanted to get down with her. I’m not sure what is was about it that I liked so much, maybe because it was the only thing she ever let me do for her. And I liked the way her arms hung around my neck when I carried her, that always gave me a good feeling too.
I grabbed her purse and swung it over my shoulder. Scooping her up in my arms, I carried her through the shop. When we made it out of the door, I moved one of my arms from around her and reached into my pocket to grab the keys. She shifted in my arms slightly but it was enough to make me lose my center of gravity as I locked the door.
Bumping us both into the glass door, I teased, “Must be all them damn cookies.”
“Gah, you’re an asshole,” she fussed and began squirming in my arms.
“What? You ate like forty of ‘em.”
I set her on her feet by the passenger door when we reached my car.
She immediately snapped at me, “Are you calling me fat?”
Ah, hell…
“No, ma’am, just giving you a hard time.”
“Do you think I’m too heavy?”
“Not even a little bit,” I swore, now wondering why I always had to open my smartass mouth.
 “What if I was?”
I get that she was maybe a smidge sensitive since she had put on a little weight since the summer. Like I or any man in his right mind gave a damn about that. Sexy ain’t a size. Beauty is beauty, ya know.
“Okay crazy, can Joie come back out to play?”
Stomping her foot, she insisted, “Answer me.”
Pretending to take the matter seriously, I asked, “How big are we talkin’ here?”
 “Five hundred.”
 “Pounds?”
With a curt nod, she crossed her arms against her chest.
“I’d start workin’ out so I could still carry you.”

Release Day Blitz + Giveaway: The Long Way Down*M. Sembera

Title: The Long Way Down
Author: M. Sembera
Genera: Standalone/Women's Fiction/Romance
Release Date: September 22

The Long Way Down is a Women's Fiction/Romance standalone based on the character Abigail from my Rennillia Series. Highlighted by the men in her life, Abigail's story begins with a summer friendship, that sparks a life-long game of back and forth. As she and Soman commit to making their childhood dreams come true, first loves, broken hearts, and betrayal pit them against one another. Lines are not only drawn, but crossed when the two reconcile just long enough to create a legacy that neither one can control.

EXCERPT:

The moment was filled with sentiment and emotion as his firm but gentle lips moved against mine. He pulled away slightly just long enough for me to catch a glimpse of his dimple as he smiled before leaning back in for another kiss. I breathed in deeply, sliding my hands up his chest, against the sides of his face and into the back of his hair. There was a certain innocence to the warmth I felt as he held me in his arms. My mind ticked back to the anticipation I once felt, awaiting this moment. Now that it was happening, and innocence had long left us both, it wasn't enough.

I waited for our kiss to slow down a bit before pulling away. Instantly missing the feel of being in his arms, I was delighted to see the same emotion reflecting back at me from his eyes. I gathered the sides of my white cotton nightgown in the palms of my hands before sliding it off over my head. The longing in his expression was satisfying as I stood almost completely naked in front of him. With soft smile on my face, I turned and walked back to my room.
